Day 20 – Your New Morning Routine. What’s Next?

So now that you’ve created your morning routine using the principles outlined over the past 20 days, you’re ready to put this new routine into action! Once you start your daily practice, you’ll immediately begin to receive feedback. Some of it will be positive, and some will be negative. You may notice how much better you feel when you leave the house after having completed your morning routine – that’s an example of good feedback. You may notice how resistant you were to completing a certain part of your routine – that’s also feedback. Pay attention to it all. After awhile, you can begin to draw conclusions from the feedback you’ve received that will help you tweak your routine when it’s time.

Some of that feedback will come in the form of setbacks. It happens. As you practice your new routine, you’re going to experience some manner of challenge or obstacle. Maybe you’ll wake up too late to complete your routine. Maybe the sense of overwhelm will cause you to skip a day or two. Whatever manner of setback you experience, take it in stride, and understand that it’s all just part of the process. It’s also important how to handle setbacks, so they don’t turn into failures.

Maintaining a good amount of mental flexibility will keep failure at bay. Flexibility is important because it allows you to turn any situation or circumstance into a winnable moment. This is great as it fortifies your self-image as someone who is committed to the process even when it’s difficult; someone who is flexible enough to turn potential losses into wins. Remember:

        1. Individual missteps don’t affect the long game – Never feel bad for getting off track. Never spend time in self-pity for not sticking to the program. When you find yourself falling short, the only thing to do is get back on track. And as you do, do so with pride because you’ve just demonstrated your resilience!
        2. Avoid a negative pattern/trend – When you fall, get back up as quickly as possible. Don’t multiple days to pass with you still on the ground and off track. Doing so creates the beginning of a negative pattern, and patterns have momentum. The longer you stay on the ground, the harder it will be to bounce back.


Flexibility is one important key to staying on track, a growth mindset is another. Too often, when it comes to goals, we start too fast and fall just as quickly. In our initial wave of motivation, we think you can take on any obstacle and will ourselves to victory. This is the wrong approach. Throughout this whole series, I’ve gone to great pains to impress upon you the value of starting small; making things easy in the beginning. There are many reasons for this, but the main one is to expand the way you look at growth and development in your life. There are times when you’re under the gun and have to get a certain result within a certain time frame – that’s one thing. Most of the time that’s not the situation at all! It’s just us creating unnecessary time limits and restrictions on something that should be considered a lifelong process.

You’re not in a race. All that’s required for progress is to keep moving forward. When you think about things from this point of view, you’ll have no problem starting small because you also trust yourself to keep moving forward. The benefits that come as a result of adding a certain skill or habit to your life will be yours, inevitably, because you understand the real keys to success are growth and consistency over time. This applies to your new morning routine, as well. Allow your morning routine to evolve as you evolve. There’s no need to rush it just keep growing – putting one foot in front of the other, and you’ll receive the rewards you hoped and planned for, and so much more.
